After much frustration of not being able to learn anything other than chain stitch I finally sat down with my hook, wool and YouTube. There are some great videos on the internet for helping learn to crochet. (here is one of the videos that I used to help with the basics).
So, with the help of YouTube I finally learned how to single, double and treble crochet! Among a few others that I still need to practice!
This is my first real project:
I made 2 bows! They are far from perfect but I can only improve with practice (I hope!!). (Click here for bow video tutorial I used).
I am still struggling to figure out how to read patterns so for now I think I will focus on using YouTube until I am more confident. I cannot wait to to try these when I finally do figure it out! (all from Simply Crochet Issue 1).
Simply Crochet is great as it shows you how to crochet for left handed people. Most tutorials and beginners guides focus purely on teaching right handed people, which can make it more difficult to learn when you are left handed like me!
Are any of you left handed crochet-ers? How do you find it?
Do you have any favourite easy patterns you would recommend for beginners?

Here are my first few chain stitches!!
And my first project!!
First crochet project
This first project was inspired by a project in the new Simply Crochet magazine (issue 1). Super easy project, just 3 single chain stitched strings pleated together (please excuse me if I’m not using the correct terminology!). It is a great magazine and I recommend anyone interested in crocheting to take the subscription offer to try it! I also made a simple bracelet for my boyfriend (just a single chain stitch).
So I think I’ve got the chain stitch down now, I just need to figure out how to do other more complex stitches! I’ll keep you updated on my progress.

So, I finally finished procrastinating and finally wrote up my personal statement for postgrad application! Just need to edit it slightly and send it off.
In other news, my Simply Crochet magazine came in the post so I can finally start learning the basics. They have a great offer on at the moment, where you can subscribe for 3 issues for only £5. Bargain!
I will start sorting though my pictures and find all the ones I can of my previous sewing projects, ready to post on here!
Have a great weekend!
